How to keep your carpets looking good for longer
The 5 simple habits that make your carpets last longer are not complicated, and none of them take much time. A good carpet is one of the bigger things you buy for your home, so it pays to look after it. Excel Carpets is a family-run carpet cleaning company working across East Sussex and parts of Kent and we see how much difference everyday care makes when we visit homes around the area.
This guide sets out the 5 habits that make the biggest difference. They cover the everyday routine at home and the one job that is worth leaving to a professional. The advice is practical and based on what actually keeps a carpet in good condition.
Vacuum regularly to protect the fibres
Most of the wear in a carpet comes from grit and dry soil, not from people walking on it. Tiny particles work their way down into the pile and rub against the fibres every time someone walks past, a bit like sandpaper. Regular vacuuming lifts that grit before it can do any harm.
Vacuum the busy areas, such as hallways, stairs and the main routes through a room, more often than the tight corners. Go slowly so the vacuum has time to pull soil out of the pile rather than skimming over the top. A few sweeps in different directions works better than one quick run.
