Why a carpet can stay damp for longer
Soaking a spill with water can wet the carpet backing and underlay, making the area take longer to dry. It can also leave a musty smell or cause the stain to reappear as moisture moves back up through the fibres.
For liquid spills, blot with a clean white cloth, working from the outside edge towards the centre. Avoid rubbing or adding lots of water. Our guide on how to get stains out of carpet has advice for common spills.
FAQs
When can I put furniture back after carpet cleaning?
Wait until the carpet is fully dry to avoid colour transfer from furniture finishes or rust marks from metal legs. Leave any protective pads in place until both the carpet and furniture are dry, following the advice given on the day.
Can I vacuum my carpet to help it dry?
No. A normal household vacuum is for dry dirt, not damp carpets or water. Wait until the carpet is fully dry and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a fan to help it dry instead.
Can I put a rug back over a freshly cleaned carpet?
Wait until the carpet is fully dry. Rugs, pet beds, floor cushions and storage boxes can restrict airflow over damp areas and slow drying.
What should I do if my carpet is still damp the next morning?
If drying is taking longer than we advised, contact us. Tell us which areas feel damp and whether there is an unusual smell. Keep the carpet ventilated and uncovered while it dries.
